MalMoun Project

Lifestyle Medicine & GLP1 Programme

A pilot programme combining lifestyle medicine with GLP-1 treatment, delivering strong early improvements in HbA1c, weight and metabolic health.

Context

The MalMoun Project was developed at Mayfield Surgery in Stoke-on-Trent to support patients living with Type 2 Diabetes. The programme integrates lifestyle medicine alongside GLP-1 (Tirzepatide) treatment to provide a more holistic and sustainable approach to care.

The Challenge

While GLP-1 medications can support short-term improvements, there is a need for structured lifestyle support to help patients make sustainable changes and maintain outcomes beyond medication.

The Approach

  • Group-based lifestyle medicine sessions covering all six pillars

  • Delivered alongside GLP-1 treatment (Tirzepatide)

  • Supported by a multidisciplinary team including GPs, a personal trainer, and wider practice staff

  • Use of LMA resources and patient workbooks to support behaviour change

  • Integration of exercise and practical lifestyle interventions within sessions

Results and Outcomes (early cohort)

  • 17 patients completed the first cohort

  • Average reduction in HbA1c: 28 mmol/mol

  • Average weight loss: 8.9 kg

  • Average reduction in waist circumference: 7.8 cm

Feedback from participants has been strong, with high levels of engagement and positive response to the combined model.

What this shows

  • Combining lifestyle medicine with GLP-1 treatment can enhance outcomes

  • Structured behavioural support is key to sustaining change beyond medication

  • Group-based delivery can be effectively integrated within primary care settings

Next Steps

A second cohort is underway, extending the model to patients not eligible for GLP-1 treatment, using lifestyle medicine as a standalone intervention. Further results and insights will be shared as the programme develops.
